| Cairo,
also called al-Qahirah, is
the capital of Egypt. Cairo is not only the
largest city in Africa
but also the political and cultural
pivot of the Arab world. Its population
is
around 15 million. The older areas in Cairo
still retain their medieval form and
many of
the streets are known from descriptions
given to them by early chroniclers. |

The
city expanded and developed
in a speedy rate during
the 19th century. The architecture
is a combination of Ottoman and
European
elements, commercial buildings owing
more to
the latter, particularly in the center of
the city.
